Zoom has introduced a new asynchronous video tool called Zoom Clips. It enables users to record, edit, and share video clips without the need for a live meeting. Currently in public beta, Zoom Clips offers a dedicated content library where users can efficiently manage, share, rename, search for, download, or delete their clips. Accessible through the desktop Zoom app, the Zoom web portal, as well as the Mac menu bar and Windows system tray, Clips allows users to capture both screen and webcam feeds, optionally with a virtual background, or specific portions of their desktop. After recording, users can enhance their clips by adding a title, description, and tags, trimming unwanted sections, and sharing via email through Zoom's web portal. Additionally, SuperNormal, a newer contender hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, offers a work communication platform that leverages video and screen recording tools for teams to create and share asynchronous video updates. SuperNormal recently secured $2 million in seed funding.


2020. Vimeo introduces free video messaging with Vimeo Record



Vimeo Record introduces a novel solution enabling teams to engage in asynchronous video communication. In certain instances, conveying your message through video proves more effective than "scheduling another call or composing a lengthy email or Slack conversation." As a result, Vimeo has developed a Google Chrome extension that simplifies screen and face recording, facilitating easy sharing, commenting, and organizing of recordings into folders with varying permissions. Additionally, users receive notifications when their recordings are viewed. While sending unlimited messages remains free, premium features such as hosting videos on a third-party, custom-branded video platform will incur charges from Vimeo.

2013. Skype Video Messaging is generally available for free

2011. Skype acquires Qik, makes group video calls paid



Skype is making significant strides this year. Shortly after launching the iPhone version with video chat, the company has made two important announcements. Firstly, Skype has acquired its competitor, Qik, a mobile video chat and video mail service for Android smartphones, for a sum of $150 million. This suggests that Skype for Android with video chat will be available in the near future. Secondly, Skype has introduced a paid Premium subscription, which includes a key feature: group videoconferencing for up to 10 people. The subscription is priced at $8.99 per month or $4.99 for a day pass. As a result, free group video calls are no longer available. Group video conferencing is also accessible in the Skype business version, costing $8.99 per month. It's important to note that only the user initiating the video call needs to pay. Mobile Skype users can also participate in group video conferencing, although without video capabilities.
